National Lab for Superconductivity
 

In line with the rapid development of research on high-temperature superconductors, the State Commission of Development & Planning (SCDP) ratified the establishment of a National Laboratory for Superconductivity in the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1987.

State Key Laboratory of Magnetism
 
Initially research work on the modern magnetism around 1928, the State Key Laboratory Magnetism (SKLM) was found in 1990, aimed at promoting fundamental and applied research for magnetism and magnetic materials in China.

State Key Laboratory for Surface Physics
 

In 1987, the State Key Laboratory for Surface Physics (SKLSP), as one of the first ten state key laboratories, was founded under the auspices of The State Development Planning Commission of China.

Key Laboratory of Optical Physics
 
Optical physics is one of the earliest disciplines established in the institute. In Nov. 1994, the laboratory of optical physics was authorized as an open laboratory of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and now is a key laboratory of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Beijing Laboratory of Electron Microscopy
 
Beijing Laboratory of Electron Microscopy (BLEM) is one of the first open laboratories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). BLEM's role is to develop excellent research programs on the electron microscopy science and advanced technology in cooperation with other laboratories. Fundamental subjects are the central parts in the research works those are performed in BLEM.

Extreme conditions refer to those physical conditions that neither naturally exist nor can be easily obtained through conventional methods in our everyday life, such as ultra-low temperatures, ultra-high pressures, ultra-high density, extremely high electrical and magnetic fields.

Nanoscale Physics and Devices Laboratory
 
The Nanoscale Physics and Devices Laboratory (NPDL), Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was established in 2001 as the laboratory of fundamental and applied physics, Institute of Physics, CAS, through merging of the Laboratory of Beijing Vacuum Physics of CAS and Crystal Growth Laboratory and Lithium Ion Battery Laboratory as well as Single Electric Device Laboratory of Institute of Physics.

The term soft matter or soft condensed matter encompasses systems which are highly flexible and extremely sensible to external perturbations. They exhibit numerous forms of self-organization and have significant structure and dynamics on mesoscopic length scale (~10 to 10000 nm).
